By Kurt Feigel – LTP President

I wanted to make sure that the contribution of the Tea Party wasn’t lost in this latest election. A large portion of the victory in these 2011 elections was because of Tea Party groups across the state. In the case of Bill Stanley (20th State Senate District) it was the Danville, Lynchburg, Southside, and Franklin Tea Party groups knocking on thousands of doors and making tens of thousands of calls for over 8 weeks that put us over the edge in this close race.

The same is true here in Lynchburg. In the race for the 22nd Bert Dodson spent over $300K and yet he was still stomped by Tom Garrett with a 58.4% lead as reported by the News and Advance. The Lynchburg Tea Party knocked on over 5000 doors [NOTE: Mike Troxel LTP Vice President is largely responsible for organizing this herculean effort ] and other Tea Party groups had similar GOTV efforts taking place. We also participated in phone banking, though our efforts were dwarfed by the Liberty University College Republicans who made something in the order of 50,000 calls.

During the primary we were told by the Establishment that we needed a candidate that could “beat” the other guy. Principle and political drive were not what was important. If that had been achieved, I’m not so sure we would have won.

How is it that the Establishment and the Tea Party were found to be working together? Simple. We had a principled candidate that we could work FOR! Were it not for principled candidates like Tom Garrett and Bill Stanley many of us would have gone home. We might have worked AGAINST the ‘other guy’, but there are no guarantees of that.

Politics is a delicate balance between pragmatism and principle. For too long it has been weighted towards pragmatism. Look at John McCain,Bob Dole,George Allen, and a host of other examples. The GOP (Grand Old Party) or the Republican Party has forgotten it’s creed.

The Virginia Republican Creed:

We Believe . . .

That the free enterprise system is the most productive supplier of human needs and economic justice

That all individuals are entitled to equal rights, justice, and opportunities and should assume their responsibilities as citizens in a free society

That fiscal responsibility and budgetary restraints must be exercised at all levels of government

That the Federal Government must preserve individual liberty by observing constitutional limitations

That peace is best preserved through a strong national defense

That faith in God, as recognized by our Founding Fathers, is essential to the moral fibre of the Nation

© Copyright 1975, 1997 by Republican Party of Virginia, Inc.

I’ve highlighted the two that I think are the most important above. The pragmatist would be quick to throw those under the bus if it meant “beating the other guy”. The Tea Party would not. The Tea Party is driven by principle and at the core of our principles are those 2 statements. This is why we have such a hard time working with the Establishment. It is our belief that without principled representatives that can hold the line and defend the creed above that this nation will continue to be sold out for expediency! The pragmatists (guys like Shaun Kenney at Bearing Drift) would vote for the prince of darkness if it meant defeating the other guy.

In Virginia much of Republican politics is run like a fiefdom of lords and dukes and we are the lowly serfs that must do their bidding. When the surfs rise up the ruling elites would rather burn the castle down than work with us.

For the first time in a long while this didn’t happen. The Establishment and The Tea Party worked together in races all across Virginia to defeat the Democrats. The Virginia Tea Party Federation, a coalition of over 45 different Tea Party groups across the state, had one goal “FLIP THE SENATE”.

We were committed to that and so was the Republican Party of Virginia.

The success of this race however would not have been possible with the Republican Party or the Tea Party alone. There is a machine of politics that must be turned on and in many parts the Republican Party has the keys and we are the foot on the gas pedal.

The Republican party could take a lesson from this in some future races we are hoping to win. Give us a candidate with principle and we will crawl over broken glass to get them elected. Many people will not vote for the likes of George Allen or Mitt Romney. The days of Voting for the “lesser of 2 evils” are over for many in the Tea Party. They’ve read Atlas Shrugged and are ready to “Go Galt” ( referring to exiting the system completely ). Don’t think for a second that the disdain they have for Tim Kaine and Barack Obama will be enough to overcome this. Many believe that the Federal government is a lost cause.

We are all reveling in the victory today. Victory is indeed sweeter than defeat!

Give us a principled candidates or be prepared to taste defeat once again.

Lynchburg Tea Party President

I spoke with Congressman Robert Hurt today. I’ve spoken with him enough over the past year to know when he is truly frustrated and this is one of those times. He like many freshman congressman went to D.C. like Mr. Smith. Intent on changing things. Sent there with a purpose and a mission only to have that mission and purpose thwarted. On the issue of spending alone Hurt said ” It’s easy to believe that we won…but now is more important than ever that we stay focused”. He went on to reference that we are borrowing 40 cents of every dollar to the tune of 1.6 trillion every year with a national debt of over 14 Trillion dollars.

It’s “unsustainable” said Hurt, and not just as a platitude. He means it.

If you have listened to some of his floor speeches you can see that he is not the same quiet guy that left Southside back in January.

“Failure to address the problems now will lead to the failure of our nation…I’m not a pessimist as I believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel…I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t” The problem is that, as Hurt puts it, Washington D.C. “moves slow as molasses” .

As I talk to Tea Party leaders across the commonwealth of Virginia they all have the same message. CUT SPENDING. And yet it isn’t getting done. Not for lack of desire on the part of some. The message that isn’t really getting out is what caused this budget crisis? The budget that is being worked on and the “continuing resolutions” that have been passed so far have been for “Fiscal Year 2011″ a budget process that was started under the previous House controlled by Democrats. A Senate Controlled by Democrats. A Whitehouse controlled by a Democrat.

So why is all the blame being focused on the Republicans?

HR 1 the first bill of 2011 cut $100 Billion dollars in waste and abuse. A small dent to be sure, but the number one expenditure in our nation is entitlement spending. ” The big money reforms need to come from Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid or those systems will fail ” and he is right.

Robert Hurt was one of 47 Republicans that has stood his ground on spending according to Heritage.

47 Members (all Republicans) showed a rock-solid willingness to cut spending by voting for every spending cut:

    * Amash, Bachmann, Broun, Campbell, Chabot, Chaffetz, Coffman, Duncan (TN), Duncan (SC), Flake, Fleming, Franks, Garrett, Gowdy, Graves (GA), Heller, Hensarling, Herger, Huelskamp, Huizenga, Hurt, Jenkins, Jordan, Lamborn, Mack, McClintock, McHenry, Miller (FL), Mulvaney, Myrick, Neugebauer, Paul, Pence, Pompeo, Price (GA), Ribble, Rokita, Royce, Scalise, Schweikert, Scott (GA), Scott (SC), Sessions, Walsh, Wilson, Woodall, and Young (IN).

In addition to that first 100 Billion Robert Hurt voted for almost $40 Billion more that was shot down by…say it with me…Democrats.

In a statement released via email today Hurt said:

We have taken important first steps to change course in Washington. I have voted to cut over $136 billion in government spending. I have voted to repeal and replace the Democrats’ health care law in its entirety, to repeal the onerous 1099 provision that burdens small businesses, and to de-fund provisions of the law when the House passed H.R. 1.

With rare exception such as his vote to extend the Patriot act I’ve not seen a lot that I should be concerned about.

The real blame needs to be focused on who is responsible for this mess: The Democratic Party.

I’m no friend of the establishment GOP. Their biggest problem is they think in terms of political calculations and not always about doing whats right. They like to throw out the “11th Commandment” and then throw solid representatives under the bus. All that said they are not the wrench in the gears here. Their biggest problem here is they think the truth alone is good enough. That you don’t need to sell the truth. Why? The democrats and Obama sell us lies all the time. Look at Libya. Look at the President today on TV criticizing the oil companies for not drilling when his administration won’t let them drill. A is A, unless you are Obama.

Schumer said he was:

“agonizing over whether to give in to right-wing demands that they abandon any compromise on their extreme cuts.”

“Extreme”? How about you cut 1.6 Trillion Dollars of the money we don’t have? I wouldn’t call that Extreme Chucky! I’d call that RESPONSIBLE!

The GOP Leaders need to hammer this point home at every opportunity:The Democratic leadership had over 1 year starting back in April of 2010 to begin and complete this budget which was supposed to be completed back in October. Instead they’ve been living on borrowed time and borrowed money. Our time and our money! They have been blaming the GOP for “not passing a budget” when it was the 111th Congress that didn’t get it done. Further they are demanding that the debt ceiling be raised to fund their insanity. As a Father I’m constantly telling my kids “money doesn’t grow on trees” but nobody has told these children running the ship of state. Instead, as usual after a game of kick the can, they are pointing the finger at the Republicans who dare to touch their third rails of politics. Sadly we haven’t even started on the Fiscal Year 2012 budget yet. 2 more great examples of the failures of Liberalism.

It’s too soon to throw out the representatives that are trying to get the job done. They are out there. Likely there are a few that are long past their expiration date. Robert Hurt isn’t one of them and anyone that thinks so after 3 months needs to get out of politics.

When the time comes to “shut down” the government my advice to Robert Hurt and anyone else that is serious would be to LET IT! Stand strong and confident that we support you. When it does shut down and the finger pointing begins make sure THE PEOPLE know the cold hard truth and nothing but the truth.

Dear Friends of Liberty,

HB1721, that would make Urban Development Areas optional rather than mandatory, is being attacked by heavy weights like the Home Builders Association, Southern Environmental Law Center, and the Sierra Club.

Republicans on the House Counties, Cities and Towns Sub-committee #2 unanimously recommended to report HB1721 on Thursday, January, 20. But on Friday, January 21, Speaker Howell and House Republicans caved to the pressure of special interest groups and the bill was set aside by the full committee.

Members of the Home Builders Association stand to gain a great benefit from the construction of UDAs. Not only can they build up to twelve homes on a single acre of land that they can purchase very inexpensively, but they get tax breaks for the new urbanism, green building, and green energy efficiency practices used in the construction of these high-density communities.

Organizations like the Southern Environmental Law Center and the Sierra Club are heavily funded by other international organizations like ICLEI and benefit greatly by defeating the bill.

The reality, folks, is if we don’t get this bill passed, local governments have no choice but to approve the comprehensive plans in EVERY locality in Virginia because UDAs are MANDATED. What that means is we will have little chance of stopping the implementation of Agenda 21.

WE NEED ALL HANDS ON DECK NOW if we are to be successful! We must show them who the real heavy weights are.

I strongly urge you to mobilize each and every one of the members of your organizations to:

1. Contact every member of the House Counties, Cities and Towns Committee and Speaker Howell to urge them to vote in support of the bill.

The committee meets on Fridays in House Room D at 8:30am so this bill is likely to come up again in committee next Friday, January 28.

2. Urge citizens from EVERY locality of the Commonwealth to be representatives of their community at the next committee meeting on HB1721. At the last meeting, there were only four in attendance and only two localities were represented.

Please feel free to use the talking points provided to help draft your reasons for supporting HB1721.

We are in the fight of our lives to defend private property rights. It is up to each and every one of us to do all we can to get HB1721 passed out of this committee and on to the floor for a vote.

This is not a right or left, conservative or liberal, Republican or Democrat issue.

HB1721 is about allowing localities to have choices about whether the market in those localities can bear more development in a soft market when 1 in every 501 homes in Virginia is in foreclosure.

HB1721 is about allowing localities to decide if UDAs are appropriate for their community.

HB1721 is about putting decisions on how growth is to be managed back in the hands of the communities where it belongs.

HB1721 will stop localities from being forced to replace low cost housing in communities targeted for smart growth with high priced housing that will drive the elderly on fixed incomes and low-income families out of their homes.

HB1721 will stop localities from being forced to impose very restrictive energy and water regulations that will result in the rationing of resources.

HB1721 is about protecting the individual right to own and control the use of one’s own property in Virginia.

Please act now! The future of our children, grandchildren, and beyond is on the line.

By Josh Pratt
Significant political victories throughout the country at both the federal and state levels have wrung a deafening alarm to the liberal establishment that real ‘hope and change’ has come in the form of a social movement; a tsunami fed by multiple little streams of local influence called the TEA Party. TEA Party Patriots, 912 groups, and other liberty minded federations across the country brought to the American political experience a true grit grassroots brushfire that was a mighty blaze to watch on Election Day. Yet, today when the establishment looks to the horizon they do not see smoke or the flames of liberty blazing they see distant embers dimming and with each passing day lessoning their worry because ‘game day’ has passed. What does all of this mean?

We, the TEA Party and conservatives of the Republican Party, have acted like we are in a spectator sport. We have the wrong perspective. Now that there has been a touch down we’ve cheered and back slapped each other as if we have accomplished the great goal, we haven’t. This is self-deception has been the cause of many of the failure of conservatives at the hands of an advancing liberal agenda.

The opposition has a different perspective; they act as if they are in a war. They are organizing, training, and preparing for the next battle. We, on the other hand, are relaxing, enjoying the victory lap and taking a break; hence the flames of liberty have reduced and the embers are beginning to die.

Since the inception of the TEA party movement I have been trumpeting the revolution from within the Republican Party not from without. TEA Party minded people must get involved in the Republican Party at the local level if any real effective change is to remain and become the norm.

This is why I am calling for organization in the form of training the activist grassroots core; training in the art of influence and strategy to affect the local and county level politics. I am calling it “the Bubble Up” because the revolution is bubbling up from the grassroots. It is bottom up not top down movement. It is a movement from the people, by the people and for the people, to preserve liberty and push back the statist, both Republican and Democrat.

Shall we then go quietly into the night? No! Man the bellows, sound the alarm, the reds are here. Edmund Burke said it best, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”# I say: “do something, do something, do something.” We must fan those embers into a viable heat for battle and cause the flames of liberty to leap once again. Here are a few suggestions on how to wage this war:

Gain membership in the local Republican Party

Identify local races that can be challenged by TEA Party minded people

Host a TEA Party House Party

Give of your time, talent and treasures to the cause of liberty.

Gain Membership
For far too long, conservatives have been relegated to the fringe of the Republican Party and in many cases shut out and silenced. The Republican Party should be Conservative. Instead the party has been an aisle crossing moderate at best and a liberal at worst. A conservative revolution is what this country needs, grass roots activism is where it begins; the local level from within the Republican Party is the first line of attack.

By becoming a member of the local Republican Party you gain two things: 1) When you become a member you get a vote in the party, a voice in the decision making process. One vote can make the difference especially at the local level. 2) By gaining membership you can also have influence that you cannot have from without the party unit.# This has been demonstrated well in many ways but most evident is the third party movements of the past.

Does it work? Absolutely! In the fifth district of Virginia a plan to take over unit chairs was launched in the 2010 cycle by Virginia Fifth Watchdog . In that effort 11 Republican unit chairs were replaced. This activity has become labeled as being “Boyered” because the main influence one the ground behind the movement was Rick Boyer Jr., a longtime Republican and social conservative activist.

This example of a take over from within had the effect it did because of the grassroots activists that were voting members of the local Republican units.

Identifying Local Races
When identifying a local race such as city council member, county supervisor, or another local policy making position it is important to keep in mind that the moderate (middle of the isle deal maker) is more likely to be defeated by a conservative than is a liberal. A moderate incumbent that has voting record of leftward-statist votes can be used to demonstrate to people the need to replace him or her with a conservative TEA Party minded candidate.

Just simply look around, you can find a potential candidate within your TEA Party group or the Republican Party. He can be a business man, a person of influence, someone with charisma and no skeletons. Once a person is identified you can help them to get the proper training to run a successful campaign. Organizations like The Leadership Institute, American Majority and the Reagan Institute for Conservative Leadership can provide training for conservative candidates and grass roots organizations. Contact me for more details.
Host a TEA Party House Party
It has been said that ‘all politics are local.’ Absolutely! Organizing your community from your home is not daunting or just for the politically savvy professionals. Hosting a TEA Party House Party is easy and fun.

Here a few steps to bring about a great Tea Party House Party. Select a date: a Friday or Saturday evening works best. Call a few friends: your TEA Party group is great place to start let them know what you are planning. Enlist: ask for help with inviting people (neighbors), food preparation and clean up. Ask a TEA Party leader or a TEA Party friendly elected representative to join the party and speak for 15 to 20 minutes. Collect contact info: the names and information from your guests can be used for organizing around a candidate when the time comes. This is very important – Lists of conservative activist are a key component to winning a campaign. Also theses names are a great source of new TEA Party members. Remember that ‘elections are won at the kitchen table’ and relationship building is the key to trust.
Time, Talent and Treasures

Anne Frank said, “No one has ever become poor by giving.”# Giving of your time talent and treasure to the cause of liberty is an investment in the future of our nation. Time: volunteer for a conservative TEA Party candidate. There are many tasks that a good campaign has for people to assist with if they just give of their time. Talent: what are you good at that can help a conservative TEA Party candidate? Some may be good telephone people, some may have computer skills, some may have large network of friends or business associates.

Discovering what you are talented at and then giving it to a conservative candidate is the essence of who conservatives are. Treasure: every campaign needs finances. Cash is king. Discovering where you can sacrifice a little in your life for the greater good is an important part of conservatism. Do I really need that $4 cup of coffee today, tomorrow and so on? Would the $25 dollars you save this month by not going out to dinner once help the candidate? Absolutely!

In summary Ronald Reagan said, “You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on Earth, or we will sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness.” Folks it is up to us, we the people, to make a stand against tyranny by giving of our time, our talents and our treasures. Pick one, pick two pick them all – gain membership if you already have not, find local races to turn to conservatism but whatever you do; do something, do something, do something to fan the flames of liberty.

If you are thinking of sitting at home NOW IS THE TIME to get out and make your voice heard. SHOW UP tomorrow and join other TEA PARTY activists for a fun time.

Obama recently came to Charlottesville to stump for Tom Perriello.
Last Thursday night in Campbell County conservatism and the resistance to the establishment struck a major blow against the machine that has been politics in our area for far too long. Tonight you have a chance to do the same thing in Bedford. The establishment with the likes of Tucker Watkins and other RINO’s would like you to keep things business as usual. DON’T LET THAT HAPPEN! Send a message to the RPV and the GOP “you work for us” Show up and vote to support <strong>Nate Boyer</strong>. While last weeks vote was a huge success for us it was VERY close. We anticipate the same thing happening here.

EVERY VOTE here really does matter!

A Message From Nathan Boyer:
<blockquote>The events of the last few weeks have made startlingly clear how deep is the threat to our nation’s future as the freest and most powerful land on the face of the earth. Our President and Congress have with unprecedented arrogance and disregard for the will of the governed placed us on a course that will undoubtedly take us forever down the road to decline as a world power and ultimately to oblivion if we do not strike back in a way that will cause a dramatic shift in our mindset as a people as well as in the balance of power in our government.</span>

<span style=”font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: x-small;”> I am seeking to become the next chairman of the Republican party of Bedford and am asking for your support and help. As I considered whether to run for this post, even before it became clear that this health care takeover would be rammed through, I considered the question all of us must now answer: What does this government takeover mean and what am I going to do about it? It is clear to any sane person with any understanding of our American traditions that what we have now is a disaster: A President and Congress who are nationalizing industries as fast as they can get their hands on them, crippling those they can’t grab outright and now grabbing control of something that affects each of us as intimately as our healthcare. We are on a path to the government controlling every aspect of our health care. We know that means government beauracrats will ultimately tell us what treatment we can have, when we can have it and how much of it we can have. A faceless, unaccountable government will decide under what circumstances life saving treatment can and can not be given. Just suppose: you and your spouse have a child born very prematurely and the doctors are unsure whether his life can be saved. The procedures used to try to keep the child alive are very expensive. What if the situation does not meet the criteria established by whatever government panel is charged with developing guidelines to determine when such costs are acceptable? What about when our parents and grandparents are in their declining years and government guidelines forbid them life saving care because the situation does not meet government cost/benefit criteria?</span>

<span style=”font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: x-small;”> We have a government that has decreed that we must surrender to them every aspect of our health. The Speaker of the House of Representatives defines freedom almost exactly the same way as did Karl Marx! We see that there is no such thing as a pro-life Democrat in Washington. Or moderate Democrats either. Our country is bankrupt, we are alienating long time allies around the world and our leaders are forcing dependency and coercive government on the American people.</span>

<span style=”font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: x-small;”> Are we going to stand for it? Do we shrug our shoulders and make the best of the of the death of America or do we stand and be men? Will we fight to take back control of the country from the radical left? I believe that we can save the country yet if we will, but it will cost us something! The first step is to nominate the best Republican candidates we can and to beat Democrats this fall. The statist Democrat party has declared war on us as a free people and we must take them at their word and <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>defeat</span> them! They declared unmistakably by throwing their votes on health care in the faces of their constituents that they are our enemies! They believe that we are either unworthy to govern ourselves or too stupid. We must hound them out of office and keep them out. </span>

<span style=”font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: x-small;”>Secondly, we must honestly face the question; what has the Republican party done since Ronald Reagan that gives us any confidence that the current GOP leadership will do any more than slightly check the pace of our headlong rush to socialism and decline? I maintain that the party leadership must change. The freedom movement which has found expression in the Tea Parties, the Fairtax movement, Second Amendment groups, the Parental rights movement and others must provide a principled new crop of leaders for the Republican party. We must open up the nomination process so we can effectively challenge from the right those Republicans who forget who put them there. As long as it is so unheard of for an incumbent Senator or Congressman to lose a nomination battle as to make national news when they do, Republicans will continue to disappoint us. As long as we are faced, year after year at the polls with the God-forsaken choice of holding our noses and voting for a Republican in whom we have no confidence and who has angered us many times, or voting for a third party candidate who has no chance of winning, thus allowing a freedom hating Democrat to win, we cannot hope to see this nation reverse course. We must take control of the party and keep it. We must establish and maintain a truly open nomination system. We, as the party’s base, must keep relentless pressure on elected Republicans to repeal the health care power grab at the federal level and to resist and undermine it at the state level. We must be unrelenting and not stop or get bored or frustrated and lose our focus. </span>

<span style=”font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: x-small;”> Will you help me in this effort? Will you cast a vote to elect me as Bedford County Republican chairman? The vote takes place at the Bedford Science and Technology Center on April 12. The meeting will begin at 7:00. Any registered voter in Bedford county/city who subscribes to the principles of the Republican party my participate. You must sign in, so be early. Will you join the Bedford GOP committee? A chairman can accomplish no more than his committee will allow. We must fill local Republican committees with freedom loving people who want to see dramatic change. </blockquote>
